The Bible discusses in many places that being slothful is a sin. Being slothful is a state of apathy, laziness and sluggishness. In Proverbs, written by King Solomon, it states that being slothful leads to poverty and want. It also states that slothful people make excuses for not doing work. Paul in the Epistles states that he laboured not to be burden to the Church and that anyone who refuses to work should not be fed. Christ Jesus also talks about in parables about being slothful is sin. In one such parable, Jesus describes a son that said he will do work for his father, but didn’t do it, and another son that initially refused to work but changed his mind and worked, and the one who changed his mind and worked was the one that did his father’s will. Also Jesus talks about the slothful and wicked servant that buried his master’s money and didn’t do anything with it, which is a metaphor for receiving Christ and not doing anything with it (such as being a disciple and help further the kingdom of God).
So, as you can see, being slothful is a sin, and is viewed negatively multiple times in the Bible. Try putting the advancement of God’s kingdom first in you life, such as reading the Word in your free time, volunteer your free time to the Church or other Christian organisations if you have time to give, and be diligent in your profession as you are working unto God.
