In the book of Genesis, we are introduced to two brothers, descendants of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel. Cain was a tiller of the ground and Abel was a shepherd. Cain and Abel both made offerings to God, and only one was accepted by God, why? Abel offered the best and healthy sheep to God and Cain was miserly and didn’t offer the best first-fruits of his farm. It is written in the Word that we should give a tenth of the first-fruits to God, and make alms and offerings. This is demonstrated in the first book of the Bible. Abram gave a tenth of his first-fruits to Melchizedek which was the high priest of God in the flesh, and is believed by some to be Jesus, the King of Kings, because Melchizedek offered bread and wine, in a similar manner to the Last Supper and Holy Communion.
While we are not bound to the law, but are under Grace, we as Christians tithe, make offerings and alms because we as Christians want to, not because we have to. It is written in the Bible that Faith without Works is dead, good works should flow naturally from Faith. In the Book of Jasher, which is part of the Apocrypha, Abram gave offerings of a savory meat to his father’s (his name was Terah and was from the ninth generation after Noah) idols, which go against the Ten Commandments “thou shall not make unto thee any graven image”. He actually lied to his father after he smashed the idols by saying he did not break them, but Abram came to worship the true God and reject idols. We should be willing to offer sacrifices to God; it is written throughout the books in the Bible and even scriptures not included in canon (officially approved books). As the Book of Proverbs chapter three, verses nine and ten, we should honor God with our first fruits, and as a result He will abundantly bless us.
