David is an Israelite patriarch that is mentioned in many books in the Bible. He is fourteen generations away from Jesus. He is introduced in the book of Samuel, as the youngest son of Jesse, of the tribe of Judah. He is described as a man after God’s own heart, and this is reflected in the Word of God. If you read through the book of Psalms, a number of Psalms are “Of David”. These are prayers, meditations and supplications written by David. David walked in God, and killed the Philistine Goliath with a sling and some stones, armed with Faith and trust in God.
David was very good friends with Jonathan, one of the sons of King Saul. This was a brotherly relationship with brotherly love. Jonathan ended up passing away with his father and brothers in a battle at Mt. Gilboa, as his father fell out of favor with God, because he did not follow God’s instructions given to him by the prophet Samuel. Samuel prophesied that David will rule as king after King Saul, and Saul (Jonathan’s father) made a number of attempts on David’s life before David was made king. What is amazing is that David had many opportunities to slay King Saul, but refused to kill God’s anointed. He actually killed the man that brought the news of King Saul’s death.
David shows us that we can be after God’s own heart, but can fall into sin and give into temptation. David commit adultery and murder, in order to sleep with Uriah’s wife at the time, Bathsheba. David repented of his sin, and found favor in God’s eyes through genuine repentance. Even if you commit a heinous sin, there is still an opportunity to repent and be right with God. There is no man that sins not.
