Joseph and God’s Plan

As Christians, we believe in God’s omniscience and omnipotence; the ability for God to be all knowing and everywhere at the same time. There are a number of cases in the Bible where God has had direct intervention, and divine providence, even though things may seem to be working out for the worst in the present situation, God always has bigger plans, of which we can’t fully understand or comprehend with our limited capacity at times. As we say, God works in mysterious ways!

There is one clear example of this in the first book of the Bible, Genesis. Abraham had two sons to two different women, one to a slave, Ishmael, and one was the son of promise, Isaac. Ishmael is the father of the Ishmaelites, which are Midianites. Joseph, the most beloved son of Jacob, was disliked by his brothers and sold to the Midianites, when he was seventeen. Things seemed bleak for Joseph, but God had bigger plans for him, even though his vision didn’t come to pass at that stage.

Joseph had dreams and visions of his eleven brothers serving him (he also had one sister) and told this vision to his father and brothers. The twelve tribes of Israel are named after the sons of Israel/Jacob, but there are two half tribes also, Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons of Joseph. His brothers didn’t like this very much when they found out, and sold him as a slave. He was bought by one of Pharaoh’s officers, was falsely accused and thrown into prison. Even though things seemed pretty dire at certain situations, it was all part of God’s plan, to eventually make Joseph a ruler in Egypt and prosper Israel, to fulfill the divine promise. So, if things don’t seem to be working out, have Faith, and know that God has a plan for you, even though in our own understanding it doesn’t appear to be the case.
