Repentance

A central topic in the Bible and a necessary step to Salvation is repentance. Presumptuous sins are sins that are committed whilst knowing full well that you are sinning, but you give into the temptation nonetheless. In the Old Testament, burnt offerings were offered to the LORD to cleanse sin. The Old Testament describes sacrifices for cleansing sins that are not committed without fore-knowledge and secret sins, but none for presumptuous sins. It is stated in the New Testament, in the Gospel according to Mark, that all sins will be forgiven except those blaspheming the Holy Spirit. We should repent of our sins as often as we can, but this involves changing our patterns and behaviors, and renewing our mind to become The Mind of Christ. It is with the help of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit that we can overcome our sin, and knowing what God says about us in the Word of God. Every time we sin, we grieve God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. We should do what satisfies Jesus, and pleases Him.

It is stated in the Bible that God does not tempt us, satan does, but He can lead you to the place of temptation. The Holy Spirit lead Jesus into the desert for forty days, but satan tempted Him. It is also stated that God will always provide a way out of temptation, and you will not be tempted above what you are able to tolerate, which is important to remember in times of trials. Why does God lead us into temptation? It creates a testimony such that we can be tried like gold and silver in a furnace, and remove the dross. As Paul said in the Epistle to the Romans, “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope”.

In essence, to receive the free gift of Salvation, we must be willing to repent of and turn away from our sins. We all sin, but it is through Faith in Jesus, who paid the price and died for our sins, and genuine repentance, that we are reconciled with God through the Son, our mediator and our savior. Repentance does not mean you have to confess to your pastor your sins, but confess them before God, and turn your back to them.
