The Greatest Commandments

It is written in the Bible that Jesus was asked, in the Gospel of Matthew, what is the greatest commandment? Jesus answers by saying that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul and mind. He also states that the second greatest commandment is the love thy neighbour as yourself. It is also stated that we should respect our parents (it is one of the ten commandments and also stated in the Book of Proverbs), but Jesus should come first in our life, and we should love Him the most, and our parents, while loved, are loved less than Jesus and God. The Bible states this. We should give God and Jesus our first-fruits in both time, tithes and offerings. This is why we have Church on Sunday, it is the first day of the week.

Loving your neighbour as yourself requires action. Jesus in a number of parables demonstrates how we as Christians should act. One famous parable the Bible is the Good Samaritan which described what loving your neighbour as yourself means. A man was robbed and beaten on a road while traveling, and a priest, a Levite and a Samaritan pass by in that order and see the injured man. The priest and Levite, just pass by on the far side and ignore him. The one to help him was the Samaritan, who showed compassion and helped him. Jesus asks who was this man’s neighbour? The answer is the Samaritan. We should also give alms, which means giving substance to the poor and needy, and have compassion on the less fortunate, as Jesus does.
