Giving a tenth of your income to your local Church can be a challenging task for the mind and worldly understanding of gain, but it is one of obedience to the Word of God. Are you willing to put into action your Faith and order your life with the Word of God? You must let greed and self interests to die, and worldly lusts and carnal understanding to die. It is stated in the Bible that God will bless and open the windows of Heaven over you when you obediently tithe and make offerings to God, such that it will make up for the less income.
The subject of Tithes is presented in the Bible, both in the New and Old Testaments. Tithes are first mentioned in the Old Testament. Abraham gave a tenth of his spoils to Melchizedek, who was a high priest of God and is prophesied to be Jesus. Even Melchizedek gave wine and bread to Abraham; the first communion. Jesus existed before his birth as the Son of Man and His earthly ministry, as David called him Lord in the Psalms even though David was around before His earthly ministry.
Then in the New Testament Jesus mentions that Tithes are necessary, “for you do the lesser aspects of the law such as tithe”. Literally it is about putting your resources where your mouth is, and putting Faith in action to better the Kingdom of God on earth. Make no mistake, God doesn’t need your Tithe, you need to Tithe for your sake in obedience. The Bible states that it is better to be obedient than to make offerings (see the story of Samuel and Saul). An offering is giving to God that of which is not necessary, going above the minimum required.
In the Gospels Jesus states that no man can serve God and mammon (money). He also states “How hard it is for a rich man to enter heaven? But with God anything is possible”. The Bible also states that the love of money is the root of evil. Don’t become a slave to money. It is not worthwhile to give your alms on a miserly basis but God loves a cheerful giver.
